Hike the Highlands

Most mountains make you earn the view; however, in the lush and open Scottish Highlands, we were able to hike an exposed rocky path to the summit of Stob Dubh for stunning views from start to finish.

If you want to do the hike, buy or borrow Ordnance Survey Map 384 for Glen Coe & Glen Etive (Ballachulish & Kinlochleven) and park up at grid reference NN188563 in the free lot or a nearby layby on the A82.

The trail starts from the corner of the parking lot. After walking for about 15 minutes, take the path to the left of the mini fork in the path. Carry on along the path to also take the left side of the big fork.

Now, you're going to climb a rather lengthy staircase of large stones. Unless you're ridiculously fit, the panting and glute burn will set in pretty quickly, so just keep looking back at the stunning lush mountain views to remind you why you're doing this to yourself.

After the stone staircase, you'll find yourself standing in a rocky valley between two mountain tops. The path on the right leads to summit Stob Dubh.

Enjoy the views of the faux summit marked with a pile of rocks and then continue across the rocky ridge to the real summit. Make sure to go to the third pile of rocks on the summit to get the most stunning view.

The hike took about 5 hours including a couple long stops to take in the views and chitchat with other hikers.

A few friendly reminders:

*Wear hiking boots or at least sports shoes with treads and ankle support (I saw a couple idiots wearing sandals).

*Bring lots of water (especially if you happen to catch nice weather and its hot) and some food.

*Avoid the trail if it's really windy or rainy as it would be quite unsafe on the ridge. If you normally trek with poles, bring those along.
